This course will help engineers understand the effects that earthquakes have on various types of structures and will discuss methods of differentiating pre-existing and/or other property damage from earthquake-related damage. The course includes a brief overview of earthquake science and building design along with strategies for determining the overall scope of property damage, methods of repair vs. replacement, and best ways to deal with these types of claims through use of industry-adopted guidelines used by civil/structural engineers. The presentation will also include real-life case studies. Although earthquakes strong enough in magnitude to result in property damage are relatively rare, it is important for engineers to understand how these natural events affect various types of structures so that when a large one occurs, they have the tools and general knowledge to handle these claims. Participants who attend this internal training class will receive a certificate of completion.
