YA Group was asked to assist in the analysis of a collision involving a turning vehicle and an oncoming motorcycle. At an intersection including an unprotected left-turn movement and multiple travel lanes, a turning vehicle collided with an oncoming motorcycle, resulting in severe injuries. The matter was centered on timing of impact, while raising the question of who had the right-of-way. To assess the technical circumstances surrounding the collision, YA conducted a detailed visual accident reconstruction analysis.

Challenge Overview

Determining the circumstances surrounding the collision required evaluating multiple crucial factors: signal timing, phase sequencing, visibility conditions, and right-of-way considerations. Conflicting accounts regarding the traffic signal indication at entry into the intersection made it necessary to examine the timing of vehicle movements and the decision windows available to each driver. Line-of-sight analysis was critical to understanding what was realistically observable leading up to the collision.

For YA, the challenge was not only reconstructing the collision itself, but also analyzing the observable conditions available to each driver and the timing of their respective movements within the intersection. Effectively communicating these interconnected factors required a visual approach capable of illustrating signal-phase changes, sightlines, vehicle movements, and decision windows in a clear and objective manner.

YA’s reconstruction animation integrated signal timing data, visibility analysis, and vehicle dynamics into a comprehensive visual representation of the collision sequence. The reconstruction illustrated the relationship between vehicle movements and signal-phase changes while demonstrating the observable conditions available to each driver leading up to the impact. Additional crush-based analysis supported evaluation of approach and impact dynamics, providing additional context for understanding the collision mechanics. By illustrating the interaction of timing, visibility, and vehicle behavior, the accident reconstruction provided stakeholders with a clearer understanding of the technical evidence and circumstances surrounding the incident.
