Professional Biography
Jeff Miller is a Senior Managing Engineer at YA Group and a licensed Professional Engineer with more than ten years of combined experience in forensic engineering, building design, and construction. Jeff specializes in investigating large, complex property losses related to structural and building envelope failures, including damages from hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, soil and foundation interactions, wildfires, hailstorms, windstorms, construction deficiencies, construction blasting, vehicle impacts, and tree impacts to commercial, agricultural, industrial, and residential buildings. He provides forensic engineering and consulting services to insurance companies, attorneys, and private entities.
Jeff has extensive experience in structural engineering design of commercial, institutional, and residential buildings, including wood-, steel-, and concrete-framed structures. His design background also spans the industrial sector, encompassing manufacturing and office buildings, factory retrofits, towers, equipment support structures and platforms, and other structures within chemical plant, food processing, and mining operations.
Jeff’s structural design experience includes the complete design of structural systems, production of construction documents, and construction administration across a broad range of project types — giving him a well-rounded foundation that informs his forensic investigations and property loss evaluations.
Credentials & Certifications
- Professional Engineer (PE)
Representative Consulting Assignments
- Steel Fabrication Facility | Pueblo, Colorado | Structural Fire Damage Assessment | $100MM — Investigated the extent of fire-related structural distress to a steel fabrication facility including over 30 buildings. Direct fire-related distress to wood, concrete, and steel structural systems, and other contents, estimated to exceed $100MM.
- Commercial Building | Lewisville, Texas | Structural Assessment Microburst (Wind) | $30MM — Structural engineering investigation to determine the extent of structural damage and low-slope roofing damage, in the order of >$30MM of damage, caused by a wind-related microburst event and provided a conceptual scope of repairs for the structural steel framing and low-slope roofing system; multiple buildings were damaged including one large commercial structure over 1MM square feet in occupied area.
- Commercial Building | Denver, Colorado | Storm Damage Assessment | $30MM — Investigated the extent of hail-caused damage to the low-slope roofing systems of 11 commercial buildings and provided conceptual repair and energy code related recommendations; damage resulting from the storm was in the order of >$30M.
- Commercial Building | Phoenix, Arizona | Structural Assessment Microburst (Wind) — Structural engineering investigation to determine the extent of structural damage to three commercial buildings caused by a recent wind-related microburst event and provided a conceptual scope of repairs for the structural framing; nature of the damage include significant effects to concrete tilt-up wall panels and large portions of wood roof framing and decking.
- Industrial Building | Casa Grande, Arizona | Structural Fire Damage Assessment — Investigated the extent of fire-related structural distress to a warehouse and material processing industrial facility and provided conceptual repair recommendations.
- Apartment Buildings (Multiple) | Denver, Colorado | Structural Fire Damage Assessment — Investigated the extent of fire-related structural distress to wood-framed apartment buildings and provided conceptual repair recommendations.
- Commercial Building | Phoenix, Arizona | Roof Collapse - Root Cause Analysis — Investigated the cause of a roof framing collapse at an aerospace industry manufacturing facility, engineering topics included roof drainage and plumbing analysis, and structural framing analysis.
- Apartment Buildings (Multiple) | Kansas City, Missouri | Storm Damage Assessment — Evaluate low slope and steep roofing, HVAC equipment, exterior cladding, and interior leakage across seven apartment building complexes to determine the extent of wind and hail caused distress, date storm occurrence(s), and a conceptual scope of repairs.
- Hospital Buildings (Multiple) | Denver, Colorado | Storm Damage Assessment — Evaluate low slope and steep roofing, HVAC equipment, exterior cladding, and interior leakage across various hospital complexes (eastern Colorado, various locations) to determine the extent of hail caused distress, date storm occurrence(s), and a conceptual scope of repairs.
- Municipal Portfolio (Multiple Buildings) | Denver, Colorado | Storm Damage Assessment — Evaluate low slope and steep roofing, HVAC equipment, exterior cladding, and interior leakage across various municipal owned buildings (eastern Colorado, various jurisdictions) to determine the extent of hail caused distress, date storm occurrence(s), and a conceptual scope of repairs.
- Food Production Facility | Booker, Texas | Structural Fire Damage Assessment — Investigated the extent of fire-related structural distress to a industrial food processing facility and provided conceptual repair recommendations.
- Residential | Black Hawk, Colorado | Construction Defect — Investigated the cause of building envelope failures, including interior leakage, for a high-end custom mountain house utilizing conventional wood and concrete framing combined with innovative insulated concrete forms (ICF) construction methods.
